Fortunately, I would say, reading just happened to me. When I had nothing to do but to look out through the window while my dad was reading a book, I happened to go and pick up the ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ which my sister left home. Since then, I picked up reading pretty fast and started reading numerous books and sharing them among friends. Discussing the stories and judging characters seemed great fun. The same still continues, but the level of books and the thought sharing process improved. So, all throughout, I’ve really improved as a person in developing a lot of fundamentals, wisdom, knowledge, and imagination. There is a lot more which I didn’t mention, that you gain out of reading, unknowingly. So here are reasons as to why you should be an avid reader.
1. You will know not only the story, but also the world
People usually mistake ‘only’ personality development books to help them in improving. On the contrary, each and every book one reads, though fiction, teaches you a lesson. Some books showcase you characters that you have never come across but are existent. Many people travel around to meet new people, discover traditions and experience various cultures. What less can a book give you? It will make you learn through conversations between different characters. Every book introduces a unique life story. That means if you read 10 books, you as a reader, will be able to analyze 10 life situations and will be ready to face any. So its not just about the benefits of reading, but also about understanding the world itself.
2. Reading enhances creativity
How be creative is something most people think about and we think books offer the best deal. We often hear a reader saying, ‘Arey yaar, the book was damn better than the movie’. One of the reasons being the author’s comfort and flexibility to write anything which might not be able to put forth in action in absolute. The other is the power of man’s imagination. It not only makes it possible to reckon unrealistic situations but also indicates possible solutions to the untangible or strenuous ones. Moreover, it increases the activity of the mind. So we can say reading enchances one’s creativity and allows one to develop those abilities.
3. Helps in improving verbal and communication skills
Ask a 5th-grade student the benefits of reading, he gives the same cliched answer, ‘It improves communication skills and language’. Although movies help you in the same, there is a difference. Movies not only showcase conversations and emotions, they also reveal attitudes. That is one of the reasons people get easily influenced by movies and start developing them unknowingly. Whereas when you read, you only get to know how to deal with them and put them into form in indigenous or native ways, thereby not losing originality.
4. Boosts focus and concentration
Efficiently or less efficiently, all things in the world can be done, multitasking. The only thing you cannot do is, read a book. Some people may have a habit of reading while listening to songs. This action is nowhere different from the one done without listening to songs. Because when you listen to songs and read, your concentration either stays to continue with the song running or completely focuses on what you’re reading thereby cutting off the music. Only one action can be done out of the two. That shows the amount of focus to put in for reading. Therefore vigorous reading will give form to increase in concentration and focus.
5. Makes you more confident
This may sound weird but is true. It’s because, as I previously mentioned, reading makes you better as a person, increases the capability to analyze situations better, gives you an idea on how different people react to various situations, improves communication skills and ultimately knowledge. Which superhero has the ability to overpower a guy who has all the above mentioned qualities? So, when you are equipped with something more in addition to what another person possesses or even when equally competitive, you definitely feel very confident.
6. Apart from being a reader, it helps to make you the perfect ‘writer’
A person who reads a lot will be automatically gifted the power to write. Because that is what a reader has been unknowingly working on. You don’t have to know the rules of a language to master it. You just need to know if something you want to say sounds good. That perfection develops when someone reads effectively. Both our professional and personal life deal with two things- talk and write. You just knew that you can master conversing better through reading in point 3. Similarly when you have to convince your boss for something, when you write an SOP giving your best or even when you want to write an impressive letter to your girlfriend/boyfriend, just read and you will win in what you write!
