One of the best gentleman quote:
“Being a male is a matter of birth, Being a man is a matter of age but Being a gentleman is a matter of choice.”
Unlike the common notion, being a gentleman isn’t an archaic concept. Thanks to the James Bond movies and good parental upbringing, there are many men out there who fit this category perfectly. It is in fact a matter of choice that many modern men are making these days.
But we do miss the old school gentleman because believe it or not it takes more than classic attire and good etiquette to become a true gentleman. There is some essence about the old school gentleman that modern men have lost touch of and it’s time to embrace it back again.
So here are 5 gentleman traits that need to make a comeback.
Gentleman traits #1. Owning an apology
Owning an apology is an art very few gentlemen have mastered over ages. Mastering this art can be a good asset for both your personal and professional life and it is in fact not as tough as it sounds. There are a few important elements that you have to remember when you are making a true apology.
a) There should be no ‘but’ i.e apology should not be followed by an excuse. When you truly are sorry just say sorry, there is no explanation required.
b) Know when sorry is not enough. If there is something you can do to correct your mistake then make an effort to set things right.
Gentleman traits #2. Mastering the art of perfect handshake
This is one of the important gentleman qualities. A handshake can make or break a first impression as they claim. A perfect handshake has a rich and powerful symbolic significance and there is a lot of science involved in it.
Research shows that it takes about three hours of friendly interaction with the other person in order to have the same rapport that you establish with a good handshake. This is due to the hormone Oxytocin that gets released during a handshake which helps in forming a bond.
So you better shake it right!
Gentleman traits #3. Bringing flowers for your lady.
Bringing flowers for your gal might sound extremely cheesy but trust me she will love it. Getting her flowers instead of those expensive gifts might make her feel more special than ever. Yet there is certain significance and symbolism associated with flowers that you cannot miss.
If you get her flowers on V-day trust me it’s not going to work. You should make a habit of getting her flowers on special occasions throughout the year like birthdays, anniversary, when you want to make an apology or simply to make her feel special on a normal day.
Trust me this habit will take you relationship a long way!
Gentleman traits #4. Exercising the power of restraint
As Athenian historian Thucydides put it “Of all manifestations of power, restraint impresses men the most.”
Perhaps this is the toughest of all the gentleman characteristics. In the world we live in today, it is in fact very easy to manipulate through each day and make it to the top. But a true gentleman is the one who has every opportunity to take the wrong step but he exercises his restraint to stay on the right course.
Gentleman traits #5. Make an impact but “in person”
In the tech savvy world of 2019, it is really hard to find a person who wants to be there for you in person. Be it an important business meeting , mom’s birthday or a sad breakup, If you want to do it all sitting in that bean bag in your front room and still make the same impact..psst not happening!
If you truly want to make an impact( which I think you do), then gear up the courage to be present during every occasion that demands your presence. Own up even when things aren’t working but firstly show your commitment by being present.
